Atletico Madrid are having an extraordinary season that no one really could have predicted. In fact, it seemed like they would struggle after losing Radamel Falcao.
This however, led to Diego Costa being moved from midfielder to striker, which has turned out to be one of the best decisions in recent football history.
Costa is tied in second place for most goals scored in La Liga BBVA with Lionel Messi at 25. Atletico’s keeper Thibaut Courtois is also ranked fourth in La Liga’s best goal keeper list, with his save percentage at 73.3%.
They are in the Champions League semi-finals after defeating favourites Barcelona, proving that they are the real deal.
With only a few games left in La Liga they sit top with 82 points. Just below them are Real Madrid with 79 points and Barcelona with 78 points. They look to be in great shape to win the Spanish title, and have a good chance at reaching the Champions League final.
Although Costa is injured that did not seem to be a problem in their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona.
Diego Simone is a frontrunner for a Fifa Coach of the Year award. He has made a strong team without spending big money on star players. He made a team that fights for every ball, is strong defensively, and that is not afraid of facing “big teams”.
This is a team that has not lost to Barcelona, and has beaten Real Madrid. This is without a doubt Ateltico Madrid’s season to shine, we will just have to wait and see how bright they can be.
