Chelsea have been handed a potential transfer blow as Bayern Munich have refused to give the green light for Mario Mandzukic to move away from the Allianz Arena come the end of the season.
Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer has affirmed that the Croatia international is not for sale at any price, despite the impending arrival of Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of the season which many thought would force him out.
With the arrival of the Pole on a free transfer, clubs like Chelsea and their London rivals Arsenal have reported earmarked Mandzukic as a solution to their respective ailing strike forces. Sammer has however moved quickly in order to pour cold water on such fanciful rumours.
“Nobody even has to bother to make an approach for Mandzukic,” Sammer said, according to Goal.
“He is incredibly important to Bayern and I always affectionately say that he plays like an animal.
“It is simply amazing how much work he does for the team and how much running he does during a game.”
Mandzukic, 27, has scored 20 goals in 37 appearances this season for the Bundesliga champions, but his future will remain in doubt until the summer transfer window closes, as European clubs are sure to attempt to prise him away if given half the chance.
