Liverpool are readying a monumental £38 million bid in order to bring England star Ross Barkley to Anfield this summer, The Daily Star reports.

In a shock move, the potential World Cup star could switch to Merseyside rivals Liverpool this summer, with Brendan Rodgers potentially seeing Barkley as the man to complete his side.

A £38 million bid would smash the Reds' transfer record, but Rodgers is a known admirer of the attacking midfielder.

Liverpool are not alone in the race for the young Englishman's signature, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all thought to be monitoring Barkley's current situation at Goodison Park.

However, with Everton currently in fourth place in the Premier League and well on target for a Champions League place, Barkley may not need to move at the end of the season to secure European football.

It is Arsenal that stand in the way of any potential transfer saga as it is Arsene Wenger's men that will be challenging Barkley's team for the final Champions League place come the end of the season.

But if Rodgers is serious about defending any potential Premier League trophy, it is additions like Barkley that he will need to make to his squad and prove to football fans that any title victory was no fluke.
