If pre-season is a time for speculation and predictions then the end of the season is the ideal time for reflection, assessment and contemplation.
With the 2013/14 campaign almost having reached its long awaited climax, we’re presented with the ideal period in which to take a look at who has lived up to their billing this year - who has made the difference and just how well have the big boys performed. Never ones to shy away from the statistics, we thought it only fair to consult the record books to see who exactly has had the most impact in Europe this season.
After all it’s been a ground-breaking term on most fronts, and there’s plenty of players who could potentially be vying for the coveted Ballon d’Or award come next year.
We’ve constructed a countdown of the top 20 players in Europe this year, using five representatives from each of the biggest leagues on the continent; the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga.
Using a system wherein a goal counts for five points and an assist 2.5 points, we’ve developed our way of deducing who has had the most telling contribution for their respective teams.
