Joe Cole insists he is ready to move "into a great part of my career" as he spelt out his determination to build on the success of last season with Chelsea and England.

Cole finally established himself as a first-choice player at club and international level with England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson hailing the midfielder and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher as the most improved players in the country. But Cole will not be content to rest on his laurels at the beginning of a crucial 12 months culminating in next summer´s World Cup finals in Germany.

Cole told PA Sport: "I didn´t want last season to end. I wanted to keep going, to keep the momentum going. If I could have decided, I would have kept on playing right through the summer - although a rest is nice as well."
