There are a few people in world football that should really be listened to by fans and officials when they talk about the game - Zinedine Zidane is probably one of them.
The France and Real Madrid legend this week praised Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard for his performances in the Reds title push and after calling him one of the best midfielders in the past 20 years Zidane claimed the 33-year-old deserved a Premier League winners medal. Gerrard has been terrific for Brendan Rodgers' side as they lead the league going into the final five games of the season.
Can you say a player deserves to win the title if their team does not win more points than any other? Surely the fact that he has not played in a team that was consistent enough before now means he cannot deserve one, as it is about team effort and not individual performances?
GMS suspect they may find it difficult to find a Liverpool fan to agree with those sentiments, while a number of voices have been added to that of Zidane's from the non-Liverpool supporting community. Chelsea and Manchester City will still have a big say in where the trophy is headed, but it seems as though the England captain's quest for his first league title has won the neutrals' hearts.
Gerrard is not the only player that has stood out this season and a number of them, by similar logic, could be said to deserve to be in the victorious side when the Premier League title race is decided. In fact, we have picked out 12 players we feel have done enough to deserve such an accolade and have been in 'title-winning form' even if their team has not.
