The Anaheim Ducks took a two game series with a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars Friday night. Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry both scored goals for Anaheim.
Andrew Cogliano also scored for the Ducks. Fredrick Andersen stopped 34 shots, including an amazing glove save on Trevor Daley late in the game. However, Cogliano’s game winning goal was surrounded by controversy. Stars head coach Lindy Ruff was livid when Cogliano got away with a blatant slash on Sergei Gonchar moments before scoring his goal. I believe the Dallas Stars have every right to be upset. It was a clear slash, and I can’t believe the referees missed it.
It’s amazing how a simple missed call, could and probably will turn out to be the deciding factor in this series. However, the Dallas Stars are at home for the next two games. Perhaps, the home crowd can give them the boost they need to stay alive in the series. After all, the Stars didn’t play a bad game by any means. In fact the Stars actually outshot the Ducks 15-2 in the third period alone. In addition, the Stars ended up beating the Ducks in five on five possession numbers throughout the game as well. But in playoff hockey, all that matters is the win. And unfortunately the Dallas Stars were not rewarded for their effort. I believe this loss is due to the lack of depth within the Stars roster. Yes, the Stars were successful in the regular season because of Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. But there is a lot more pressure in the playoffs. And quite frankly there is no comparison between the two top lines. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have done it all, and have far more experience then Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn.
And now that Corey Perry has tallied his first playoff goal, I believe it’s going to be even tougher for the Stars to win game three. Dallas is in desperate need of some help from some of their other more experienced players. Shawn Horcoff and Erik Cole have been pretty much non-existent so far. In fact, it was Erik Cole’s failed clearance that led to Ryan Getzlaf scoring the tying goal. This is certainly a tough loss to swallow for the Dallas Stars.
The Anaheim Ducks on the other hand just need to keep charging forward. If they can get a couple of early goals from Perry, Getzlaf, or Selanne, this series could turn into a sweep for the Ducks. Andersen has been excellent in goal for Anaheim, and I’m sure he’ll be as good on the road. I can’t wait to see if Anaheim will be able to win game three and take a three game series lead on Sunday.
