Chelsea line up move for Arsenal star

Published 3 Comments

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.

According to the Daily Express, Mourinho values the Gunners defender for his ability to play in several defensive positions. With Chelsea struggling for options at left-back – Cesar Azpilicueta has filled in admirably while out of position while Ashley Cole is expected to depart this summer – Vermaelen is being eyed up as the ideal signing.

Diego Costa remains Chelsea’s top transfer priority this season, but adding strength in depth at the back is also a concern for Mourinho. John Terry is not getting any younger, while the Chelsea boss does not trust David Luiz to play the centre-back position.

Vermaelen is capable of playing at the heart of a defence as well as at left-back, and with his Arsenal contract winding down, he could become available this summer.

The Belgium star has been replaced in the Gunners starting eleven by Laurent Koscielny, and he’s been linked with a number of clubs as a result.

First-team football may not be on offer at Chelsea either though, with Mourinho able to call on several options at every position.

But with his Arsenal contract expiring at the end of next season, both club and player will have a decision to make over his future sooner rather than later.
