Yorkshire on victory march after huge first innings advantage

Published Add your comment

Yorkshire started day three in the ascendancy as they look to achieve their
first Championship victory of the season against newly promoted Northants at

Inspired by England hopeful Gary Ballance, Yorkshire posted 459-9 declared in their first innings and will hope that they are not required to bat again in the match after their bowlers destroyed Northants' batting line-up in their first innings. The follow-on was enforced.

Ballance may well have inspired Yorkshire's large first innings total with a superb knock of 174 but it was bowlers Jack Brooks (5-36), against his former club, and Ryan Sidebottom (4-16) that really hammered home the advantage.

They combined to great affect as they blew Northants away for just 94. Northants lost all of their first innings wickets between lunch and tea and at one stage were reduced to 65-7. The Division One new boys will need to regroup quickly if they are to avoid defeat in this match.

If Yorkshire have aspirations of winning the title this season then they need to win games like these but will also need plenty of luck especially if they are to avoid the threat of rain over the next couple of days.

Yorkshire's first Championship game of the season ended in a draw against Somerset which was a good solid start but coach Jason Gillespie will know that victories are key to winning the title.

In their quest for glory Yorkshire could directly benefit from the appointment of a new England coach, Peter Moores. Yorkshire have a number of players who will be striving for good performances in order to impress Moores and enhance their own International credentials which should help Yorkshire's performances.

They will also be welcoming back injured duo Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow to their ranks. Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale will hope that rain holds off just enough over the next couple of days in order for his side to force a victory as they bid for silverware on all fronts this season.

One interesting aside from this match was a first-class record-equalling eight lbws suffered by Yorkshire in their first innings.
