After Jose Mourinho's defensive masterclass away at La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, some fans have bemoaned the performance given the lack of attacking intent.

However, there was obviously method to the madness, with Diego Costa having scored 27 league goals, former Barcelona forward David Villa on 13 and Madrid conceding just five goals in 10 Champions League fixtures this season.

To call it madness is a great discredit to Mourinho. He set his side up to stop the rolling Rojiblancos and hit them with pace on the counter through Willian, Ramires and Fernando Torres.

Don't forget, it's a 180 minute tie. 

Other managers - including Rafael Benitez - seem to have enjoyed more success on the European stage than domestically.
