The game between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid was one billed as the ultimate showdown between two worthy claimants to the space between the sticks at Stamford Bridge.
It was Incumbent vs Heir Apparent; Senior colleague vs Junior colleague; Experienced Established Star vs Talented Star; Petr Cech vs Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea are the only club in the world to have the pleasurable dilemma of deciding between two of the best goalies in the world, separated only by 10 years.
While Petr Cech did not do his reputation any harm in the less than 20 minutes he played, he still exited the pitch earlier than he would have anticipated due to a shoulder injury.
Cech would have been looking to show his appointed successor that there is life in him yet, but as fate would have it, he may have played his last big game for Chelsea.
A dislocated shoulder is a quite serious injury, but while it may not take too long to heal, it leaves Cech facing the prospect of working extra hard to prove his ability to Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff.
A goalkeepers best tool are his hands and most would fancy a fully fit Courtois to a partially handicapped Cech.
The wise thing to do would be to have Cech recuperate slowly while ensuring Courtois is finally given the opportunity to be the first choice goalkeeper for the Blues.
Cech may have been through worse before (recall that head injury) but this is the best time for Chelsea to decide to recall their on-loan 'keeper. It is unfortunate that the circumstances surrounding his ousting as first choice may have to be this, but at the end of the day, Cech's time is almost up any way.
After all, there is no way Chelsea will lost Courtois just to keep Cech, whether injured or fully fit.
