Vernon Davis says the San Francisco 49ers MUST win a Super Bowl soon and said there would be no better time than this season to put right what he believes went wrong in recent seasons.
Davis laid down the gauntlet for his teammates this season and insisted that anything other than claiming a Super Bowl winners ring would be a failure in his eyes and he challenged his fellow 49ers to see it the same way.
"We must win a Super Bowl title. You play this game, that's what you play this game for," he is quoted as saying in an interview Pro Football Talk by ESPN.
You play the game to go to the Super Bowl and that's the only reason why we play - to win and make it to the Super Bowl. So anything short of that would not be acceptable and I think my teammates know that, as well.
"I mean, we've had multiple opportunities to make it and to win it."
Those opportunities came in the past two years where there golden chances to perhaps claim their first championship since 1994. The best of these chances was in 2013 when they made it the Harbaugh Bowl against Baltimore Ravens, where they rallied after falling behind in the first half but lost by three points.
Last season they made it to the NFC championship match but could not overcome the Seahawks in Seattle, though the performances of Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman took them to the Super Bowl championship over the Denver Broncos.
David believes a Super Bowl win is still possible as they still have much of the team together that got them so close in the past two seasons. However, this offseason has been beset with worrying issues for 49ers fans.
Aldon Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after claiming he was in possession of an explosive device, cornerback Chris Culliver was arrested on hit-and-run and weapons charges. Meanwhile, quarterback Colin Kaepernick and wide receiver Quinton Patton are part of an ongoing investigation into an incident at a Miami hotel that police have described as "suspicious".
