The Seattle Seahawks have released an official statement this afternoon that quarterback Russell Wilson has filed for divorce from his wife Ashton.

The Super Bowl winning quarterback tied the knot back in January 2012 before he had entered the NFL, Wilson was drafted in the third round of the 2012 draft by Seattle.

The statement released by the Seahawks reads as follows:

"I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this personal matter.”

It seems rather an unusual step for the franchise itself to release the statement instead of the player, many athletes unfortunately endure divorces whilst playing but the news being released by an NFL team comes as a first.

Wilson has already stated that he'd rather keep his personal life away from the spotlight of the NFL and has asked for privacy on the divorce matter.
