The WWE has expressed an interest in signing on more NFL personalities, whether they be utilised in the ring, or as a back-stage personality.

And why wouldn't they?

NFL players are already in prime athletic condition, they are ready made for the physical strain of the ring, and in that respect the transition shouldn't be too difficult.

They will also represent a mainstream cross over appeal which the WWE desperately craves, the presence of these players has the potential to boost viewing figures, and subsequently boost the revenue streams.

But it is not as simple as just going into a ring and throwing a few punches.

The players would have to know how to connect with a crowd, whether that be through their promo's or through the moves they hit in the ring, an aspect even professional wrestlers can struggle to achieve.

They would also have to have a niche in the market; be someone that is different to everyone else on the roster, not necessarily having a gimmick just bringing aspects of their own personality, but emphasizing traits we see on the pitch and off it.

Shawne Merriman is the first NFL player to be signed by the WWE in many years, this article looks at other players who could successfully make that leap if they wanted.
