NFL Draft prospect Jadeveon Clowney is most people's favorite to be selected number one overall come first round draft day May 8th, but a certain NFL analyst thinks he is an 'atrocious' football player.
Clowney built his massive reputation during his colleges days with South Carolina, and there are plenty of highlight reels that confirm his dominance.
But is this dominance down to his true ability as a football player or just his natural skills as an athlete?
ESPN NFL analyst Merril Hoge believes that Clowney is indeed an 'amazing' athlete, but he believes firmly that Clowney is 'not a very good football player.'
"Is Jadeveon Clowney the best athlete? If we look at him as a fundamental football player he is atrocious. We're talking feet, hips and hands," Hoge explained on ESPN SportsCenter.
"He is an amazing athlete, but don't get confused between being an amazing athlete and a good football player. He isn't a very good football player."
The reason why the distinction between the two is so important is that the NFL represents a different class of player that can expose even the most talented players.
If Clowney has holes in his game they will be immediately exposed when he arrives on the scene.
That's why football knowledge is as important as natural talent when it gets to the big time, but does Clowney have what it takes to be successful in the NFL?
"Clowney plays great at pad level, but he doesn't play with his feet and hands. He gets controlled and trucked a lot," Hoge added.
"He has a massive learning curve on his hands on what it takes to play the game at the NFL level. Jadeveon Clowney does not play smart as a football player."
