Pau Gasol has admitted that if there’s any chances of him staying at the Lakers past the off-season, they’re sitting in the hands of Kobe Bryant.
The power forward’s future with his current franchise has been the subject of heavy speculation recently, and for a long while it’s looked as though this season could be his last at the Staples Center. The Lakers have endured an atrocious year in the NBA, and there still remains a question over whether or not coach Mike D’Antoni will be allowed to keep his job past the summer.
However Gasol told U.S sources that he has yet to make a definitive decision on where he will be playing next year and admitted that Bryant had it within him to convince him to stay on.
Gasol wrote on his own website: “Re-signing for the Lakers is a possibility, but I’m not sure whether to say it’s a remote one,” told his fans.
“If there’s anything or anyone who could make me stay it’s Kobe Bryant. I’d stay for him, but there’d have to be significant changes. I’ve said it many times: I want to be in a team that has a solid chance to win another tournament and where I can be an important factor in the game.”
It’s not exactly heart-warming news for Lakers fans, but at least it does leave an avenue open in which Gasol could stay on at the franchise if the right decisions are made.
