Bacary Sagna attracting interest from Manchester United

Manchester United are set to battle it out with arch-rivals Manchester City to sign Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna.

The Daily Star suggest the Premier League champions are interested in signing the experienced defender when his current contract at Arsenal expires in the summer.

The right-back position has been somewhat of a problem position for Manchester United this season as Rafael has struggled for form and fitness throughout the campaign.

Manchester United duo Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have had to be moved out of their natural centre-half berth in order to deputise for Rafael during significant periods of the season.

Rafael has not played since the end of March due to a hamstring injury and is not expected to return to action this weekend.

Sagna has rejected Arsenal's current contract offer as the 31-year-old is demanding a three-year deal worth £100,000-a-week.

Manchester United do not tend to offer players over 30 such lengthy deals but would be willing to meet Sagna's wage demands.

Sagna's arrival at Old Trafford could spell the end for Brazilian defender Rafael - but would hand Manchester United some much-needed experience at the back.
