It has been a month that has been packed on the topic of UFC fight purses, mainly coming from the Diaz Brothers. Most recently, UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao has talked about the issue, saying that he wishes to further his contract.
As usual, UFC President Dana White has had a response to controversial statements from his employees and has defended Barao's payment per fight. White said:
"Show me a guy who's thrilled with his contract. I want to meet that f--king guy. Even Manny Pacquiao wasn't happy with his money to fight Floyd Mayweather and that number's $40 million.
"It's always going to be tough and Barao's in this spot. Listen, who's been beating the Barao drum more than me? I think this kid, he's not there yet. He's the champion, but not the big star yet.
"Who says more positive things about Barao than me? [The] Guy's been winning fights for nine years and hasn't lost, he's on this incredible win streak, he finishes guys.
"He comes in, he's a fun fighter to watch, exciting. I don't disagree. I don't disagree. You have to be able to deliver the numbers and we're in the process now of building Barao into the star that I think he should be."
Barao is by far one of the UFC's most dominant champions. He is 32-1 and has fought the best in the Bantamweight Champion, beating the likes of Urijah Faber twice, Rory MacDonald and Brad Pickett.
He is a huge star in Brazil, however he for some bizarre reason is yet to make it big time in the UFC. This comes despite finishing his last three fights inside the Octagon, including finishing Urijah Faber in the first rond last time out by TKO.
What the Brazilian really needs to become a star is a fight with former Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz. Cruz, 19-1, was stripped of the Bantamweight Title after being out injured for so long due to a torn ACL.
Cruz has been seen on many UFC shows on the TV panel, offering his expert analysis. Furthermore, his coaching role on The Ultimate Fighter against Faber also gained him a lot of media attention.
Barao next meets TJ Dillashaw at UFC 173. Dillashaw, although is an excellent upcoming fighter, really does not do much for Barao's fan appeal as he is not a draw whatsoever.
