Liverpool are planning to rival Tottenham Hotspur for Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker this summer.
According to the Sunday Mirror, the 22-year-old centre-back will leave the Bluebirds if they are relegated from the Premier League, and the Reds are eager to secure his services.
Brendan Rodgers worked with Caulker during his time at Swansea, and believes he could help strengthen Liverpool's back line - arguably the weakest area of his title-challenging squad.
Caulker only arrived at Cardiff last summer in a £9million deal from Tottenham, but the north London club retain a buyback option on the talented stopper.
Tim Sherwood is allegedly keen to activate that clause and bring the player back to White Hart Lane, but with question marks surrounding his own future as Spurs manager the move might not be straightforward.
Liverpool will hope to seize upon any uncertainty and steal a march on their rival suitors, but Caulker will not come cheaply, particularly as Tottenham will be due 50 per cent of any profit made on his transfer away from South Wales.
