The ultimate dream match for many long-time wrestling fans could be one step closer to happening, with WWE appearing to tease a clash between The Undertaker and Sting.
The company's website produced a 'fantasy warfare' video for the pair, fueling rumours that there could be an icon vs. icon match at next year's Wrestlemania.
The flames of intrigue over a potential feud between the two has been burning for the best part of two decades, given the similarities in their respective gimmicks and their vast popularity.
And WWE's video, which has strengthened the belief that the contest is a lock for next year's big event, could be construed as a marketing pitch to gauge fan interest in the clash.
The dream match didn't happen during the WWF vs. WCW 'Monday Night War' era due to Undertaker's unwavering loyalty towards the former and Sting's long-held status as a WCW company man.
And following the latter group's collapse in 2001, Sting refused to sign with WWE due to the company's edgy product conflicting with his religious views.
But now 'The Stinger' is out of contract with ex-company TNA and with the WWE presenting a more watered-down PG product, the gates could be open for him to finally set foot into a WWE ring.
Seemingly the only obstacle plaguing the confrontation is the combined age of the pair being 104 and uncertainties over The Undertaker's future following his Wrestlemania loss to Brock Lesnar, which ended his unprecedented 21-match unbeaten streak at the event.
Although top-line former WCW stars such as Goldberg, Hulk Hogan and Scott Steiner all made the jump to WWE following the former's collapse in 2001, Sting remains the missing piece of the puzzle for Vince McMahon to lure to Stamford, CT.
Another main reason for this has always been Steve 'Sting' Borden's reservations over how his character would be treated at the mercy of the McMahons and HHH, who was instrumental in tarnishing the aura of the previously unstoppable Goldberg, when he made the jump to WWE.
But given the rumours that have been swirling that Sting has finally signed a contract, this latest hint indicates Borden could well be heading for a long-awaited showdown with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31.
