Atletico Madrid set for talks with Arsenal star over €18m move

Atletico Madrid are said to have arranged talks today over the potential purchase of Olivier Giroud this summer, as they look to prepare to Diego Costa’s departure.

According to Spanish source Cope the current La Liga leaders have identified Arsenal’s key striker, amongst other targets, as the man who could fill the void left by Costa if he does indeed join Chelsea in a mooted £50million deal. The French forward has improved this season in the Premier League and currently has 20 goals in all competitions for the Gunners.

However he has still attracted criticism over his efficiency in front of goal, and a number of off-pitch discrepancies have disrupted his harmony at the club. Furthermore, with Arsene Wenger said to be considering a plethora of high-profile European frontmen ahead of a busy transfer window, Giroud’s time as Arsenal’s number one striker could well be coming to an end.

The report in question backs up this theory and claims that the player’s agent is set to meet with Atletico chief José Luis Pérez Caminero today to discuss a possible €18million switch. It also states that the high-flying Spanish side would be willing to pay between €2.8million and €3million a year in salary.
