Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo is being lined up by Atletico Madrid as a potential replacement for Diego Costa, who is poised to complete a big-money transfer to Chelsea this summer.
Mundo Deportivo claim that Atletico will turn to Negredo if Costa is sold to the west London outfit.
No deal for the Brazil-born Spain international has been confirmed as of yet, but it's been widely reported in recent weeks that Chelsea are confident of signing the 25-year-old, who has scored 27 La Liga goals from 32 appearances this season.
Costa will play at Stamford Bridge for the first time on Wednesday night, as Atletico go head-to-head with Chelsea for a place in next month's Champions League final. The striker was largely ineffective in last week's first leg, but was clapped off the pitch and given a rendition of "we'll see you next year" from the travelling Blues' supporters at the Vicente Calderon.
The list of strikers Atletico coach Diego Simeone is reportedly considering signing as Costa's eventual replacement is growing every day. Negredo has scored 23 goals in his debut season with Manchester City, who will be keen to keep the Spain international at the Etihad Stadium, but the lure of heading back to his native country could tempt the 28-year-old.
Any offer will be made all the more tempting if Atletico, as expected, secure their first La Liga title since 1996. Simeone's men have a four-point lead over Barcelona, and a six-point lead over Real Madrid, with three matches remaining.
The Spanish club are also two games away from winning their first ever European Cup.
