Vick had previously worn the number seven at both the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles. However, when he signed for the Jets out of free agency earlier this offseason, Geno Smith already held that number.
On his instagram account today, Vick announced "I want to see everybody in there MV8 jerseys this year. I appreciate all the fans that helped. Fresh start..new me!" along with a mock-up image of himself in the new jersey.
It is not yet clear whether Vick will be given the starting quarterback job over Smith for 2014 but it seems as though the former Philadelphia Eagles passer is content enough to switch numbers for his new job.
According to TMZ, former San Francisco 49ers legend, Steve Young was a large factor in Vick choosing the number eight jersey.
Young won a Super Bowl wearing the jersey and was among the first quarterbacks in the NFL to become a dual-threat, a style which Vick has imitated to some success.
New York Jets fans will be hoping that Vick can bring a little bit of Steve Young magic to a team which was let down largely by it's offense last season.
