Despite the fact that Mesut Ozil was the epitome of brilliance during Arsenal's 3-0 hammering of Newcastle last night, the fact remains that neither the fans nor himself can honestly claim he's lived up to his pre-seasonal billing.

The German international got off to a flying start at the Emirates following his big money switch from Real Madrid last summer, but has since dwindled and looked off the pace of the Premier League when it has mattered most. If you were to ask him, and he were to answer truthfully, he'd most probably tell you he's had a poor season by his own estimations.

Of course he's not alone. This campaign has ensnared a number of casualties with regards to top players enduring a rough time, and Ozil is merely the tip of the iceberg.

With the season almost up, and the time for acton virtually at its end, we reflect on eight players who have had rather poor seasons by their own standards. Naturally the performance levels will fluctuate based on how consistently good that player has been in the past, and we've tried to take that into account...
