NBA commissioner Adam Silver today made the dramatic decision to ban LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling from dealings with his basketball team.
This comes in response to the racist comments that Sterling made during a private conversation with his girlfriend, comments that were subsequently published by TMZ Sports.
After the press conference at which Silver delivered his verdict, reigning NBA MVP LeBron James tweeted his support for the league commissioner.
"Commissioner Silver thank you for protecting our beautiful and powerful league!! Great leader!! #BiggerThanBasketball #StriveForGreatness."
LA Lakers veteran Steve Nash also expressed his support after the decision was made.
"This is an astonishing situation. Today is a proud moment. Not just for the players association. As a member of this community, I'd like to thank the mayor.
"I'd like to thank Adam Silver for his unequivocal and swift action."
It's understood that Sterling hasn't directly apologized for the remarks, but he has admitted that it was his voice on the tape.
Many sponsors have pulled out from their dealings with the Clippers since the revelations. Commissioner Silver has pleaded with those companies to reconsider their actions as a result of the NBA's ruling Tuesday.
