The fan who threw a banana at Dani Alves in the Villarreal match against Barcelona on Sunday has received a lifetime stadium ban, Villarreal announced in a statement on Monday.
The incident led to worldwide media attention, as Alves picked the banana up from the ground and ate it, leading to a worldwide solidarity campaign with many footballers taking to social media to post pictures of themselves eating bananas.
Villarreal said in their statement that it "deeply regrets and condemns the incident."
The fan has been identified and the club "decided to withdraw his season tickets, permanently banning his access to El Madrigal stadium."
The club reiterated its commitment to respect, fair play and sportsmanship and against "violence, discrimination, racism and xenophobia."
Alves in an interview with the Brazilian Radio Globo said that the fan should be publicly shamed, and that he would publish a picture of him on the internet if he had one.
He furthermore described Spain as "backward" and criticised its approach towards racism.
