Lewis Hamilton is Britain's richest sportsman

Lewis Hamilton has been revealed as the richest sportsman in Britain by the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

The Mercedes driver leads the way with an emphatic £68m worth and a cool increase of £8m on the previous year.

Despite many financial difficulties apparent in the sport of Formula One, it would seem that for the top drivers in the field, it is still an incredibly affluent place to be with Hamilton's former team-mate from his McLaren days, Jenson Button, sitting second in the list. Button has seen his fortune rise from £58m in 2013 to £63m this year.

It is more positive news for Lewis Hamilton who is enjoying a remarkable season in Formula One with the Mercedes team. The 29-year-old has won three of the first four races of the 2014 campaign and is the clear favourite to clinch the title and add to his success of 2008.

Hamilton is second in the Constructors' standings, trailing his team-mate Nico Rosberg by four points, but will get the opportunity to leapfrog the German at the Spanish Grand Prix next weekend. 

The motor racing duo lead footballer Wayne Rooney in the list who is third. The Manchester United striker's riches are believed to be £60m.

Four more footballers appear in the top ten, with Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ryan Giggs all featuring. Whilst Andy Murray after his historic Wimbledon success is in sixth joined by two Basketball players, Steve Nash and Luol Deng.

The numbers are a calculation of the people's assets and do not include bank accounts. It is the 26th year of the always eagerly awaited Sunday Times Rich List. The full version will be available in May.

2. Jenson Button (Formula One)- £63m

3. Wayne Rooney (Football)- £60m

4. Steve Nash (Basketball)- £56m

5. Rio Ferdinand (Football)- £44m

6. Andy Murray (Tennis)- £40m

7. Steven Gerrard (Football)- £37m

= Frank Lampard (Football)- £37m

9. Luol Deng (Basketball)- £36m

= Ryan Giggs (Football)- £36m
