Kevin Durant, their star forward missed a free throw to tie the game late and he is the one who needs to step up and be counted. The Thunder’s struggles with Scott Brooks as head coach has been well documented, as has Russell Westbrook’s preference to take the lead in crucial situations.
These are convenient excuses for a ridiculously talented player who could simply have made more than just his sole NBA Finals appearance. Durant needs to step up and own this team.
Last night, Durant made just 10 of 24 from the field and recorded 26 points, his second worst showing this series. Meanwhile, the ‘Batman’ of the team, Russell Westbrook took seven more shots and recorded four more points.
The Grizzlies are a good team, they match up well with OKC with Durant himself admitting that Tony Allen was in his head.
But there is no way that this Thunder team with Durant at the helm should even get close to losing this series.
The Grizzlies now have two attempts to close out this series, one at home and one on the road.
Durant needs to take the lead for the Thunder in both of these games, or he will yet again be watching the Miami Heat lifting his trophy this summer.
