Lars Bender is Arsene Wenger's priority target in the upcoming transfer window, according the Mirror.
The 25-year-old, with his defensive diligence and industry, is seen as the ideal solution to Arsenal's lack of balance in midfield. The Gunners chased the Bayern Leverkusen man last summer but couldn't persuade the German club to sanction a deal.
With Mikel Arteta entering the final year of his contract, Wenger is searching for a long-term successor, and Bender ticks all the right boxes. Ilkay Gundogan was thought to be Wenger's first choice, but Arsenal's interest has cooled since the playmaker renewed his contract at Borussia Dortmund a fortnight ago.
Elsewhere, Arsenal are primed to swoop for Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic, who looks set to play second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski when the Polish forward completes his switch next month.
Arsenal are also in the market for another goalkeeper and have been keeping tabs on Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
