Barcelona rekindle interest in Liverpool star Daniel Agger

Barcelona are ready to rekindle their interest in Daniel Agger after monitoring the Liverpool defender's situation closely are confident of completing a deal for the Danish star this summer, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

Agger was the subject of a formal transfer enquiry from Barca last summer, but the Catalan giants failed to meet Liverpool's valuation of the central defender and eventually abandoned their pursuit of a new partner for Gerard Pique.

Barca talisman Carles Puyol will leave the Camp Nou and thanks to the club's transfer ban being suspended pending appeal the chase for a new defensive star is back on, with Agger now the Spanish side's top target thanks to his precarious contract situation.

The 29-year-old's current deal at Anfield runs out in 2016 and no offer of fresh terms has been forthcoming so far, with Liverpool often preferring alternatives in a leaky back four that has been the only negative in a fantastic campaign on Merseyside.

Agger has made only 19 Premier League appearances thanks to a combination of injuries and manager Brendan Rodgers' selection policy, a stance which Barca are ready to take advantage of with a concrete transfer offer when the campaign closes.

Cadena Ser believes that Barca are ready to press ahead with their pursuit of Agger over other previous transfer targets including Chelsea star David Luiz and Thiago Silva, making securing his signature a priority regardless of whether under-fire coach Tata Martino stays next season.

Rodgers now faces a difficult decision over how best to persuade Agger that he should stay and help Liverpool return to the Champions League in style next season, particularly with the need to add strength in depth particularly pressing at Anfield.
