Extreme Rules takes place this Sunday at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey and the most extreme event of the year provides some anticipated clashes.
This is the first event since WrestleMania XXX and the WWE have managed to put together a good card after consistently impressive and engaging episodes of Monday Night Raw. Eight matches take place on the night, some meaning more than others but all in all it looks to be a good event if the matches live up to expectations.
With three titles on the line and an eagerly anticipated six-man tag team match; continue reading to see our predictions for Extreme Rules.
Pre-Show: WeeLC Match - El Torito vs. Hornswoggle
You read that right, a comedic match between El Torito and Hornswoggle has managed to make the cut over a potential WWE Tag Team Championship match. Nevertheless we will see Los Matadores and 3MB play a big role as we watch Torito and Hornswoggle battle it out with miniature tables, ladders and chairs. It’s a good job this is on the pre-show and not the main crowd, this will possibly keep the fans entertained before the main card.
Hornswoggle probably needs this win a lot more than El Torito, he has aligned himself with 3MB with his heel turn and has never been more relevant. Saying that, the WWE will want to keep the kids happy at the beginning of the night, so an El Torito win is on the cards.
GMS WWE Contributor Phillipa Hopwood says: “Does it matter? The two are great wrestlers and the WWE Universe realises that this is just a bit of fun, they will face each other again in the near future and will probably fill the gaps usually reserved for the divas matches. I will go with El Torito to win though because he is, for me, the better wrestler.”
Intercontinental Championship – Big E © vs. Bad News Barrett
Bad News Barrett has been a breath of fresh air, for months it was unclear whether Barrett even had a relevant future in the business and would live up to his promising potential. Now he is challenging Big E for the gold. He recently won the tournament by defeating Rob Van Dam in the finals and now has the chance to become Intercontinental Champion once more. I have previously said Big E will be a better challenger than a champion as he hasn’t become the champion the business wanted him to be.
The crowd are now behind Barrett; and holding the belt with the reaction he already receives is better for Barrett and for the championship; I see Bad News Barrett walking out as the only new champion on the night.
Phillipa: “I really find this one hard to predict, I love the Bad News Barrett character and whilst he is supposed to be a heel, it seems the WWE Universe has warmed to his persona and are beginning to accept him. I think Big E has had a good run as Intercontinental champion but I think two British Champions at the same time would be a great thing for WWE and Britain for that matter. Prediction: Bad News Barrett.”
Steel Cage Match – Bray Wyatt vs. John Cena
This has been a very interesting feud thanks to this new dimension Bray Wyatt has brought since he was repackaged. Although I believe Cena will never turn heel, this Sunday we will see the darker side of John Cena inside the steel cage, and it is a great setting to do such a thing. This past Monday we saw some of Bray’s best work and we’ve been treated to a great feud which started at the Elimination Chamber. I can see John Cena winning this to open up more possibilities such as joining The Wyatt Family, but I will go with Bray Wyatt. I don’t think the WWE will have him lose back-to-back matches with John Cena; and potentially having one final match between the pair.
Phillipa: “Bray Wyatt, all the way, the man is amazing, it’s not even what he does in the ring. He makes you believe things that aren’t real and I think he’s inside Cena’s head. John won at WrestleMania and I think he is regretting that now, Bray will thrive being in that cage and he will come out on top here.”
Diva’s Championship – Paige © vs. Tamina Snuka
Paige shocked the world when she pinned AJ Lee the night after WrestleMania, becoming the very first – and possibly the last - woman to hold the NXT Women’s and Diva’s Championship at the same time. Although, commissioner of NXT John Bradshaw Layfield stripped the 21-year-old from her NXT Women’s Championship; I don’t see her dropping this one any time soon. She will impress against Tamina and remain active as she continues to impress the fans as she looks to continue where AJ Lee left off; Paige will retain her title.
Phillipa: “AJ really should have been in this and I would have looked forward to it a lot more than I do. Tamina faced Paige in NXT and it wasn’t a stand out match by anyone’s imagination. Tamina is solid in the ring and her match last week on Smackdown with Natalya was one of the best this year but I don’t feel like this is going to be any more than the break of the pay-per-view, prediction: Paige."
Six-Man Tag Team Match – Evolution (Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista) vs. The Shield (Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns)
One of the most highly anticipated matches of the night will see The Shield take on their toughest test to date as Evolution reform to take on the future of the WWE. This feud is taking place so that Roman Reigns can eventually break off and take on Triple H at SummerSlam, but the argument is raised; who needs the victory more? Evolution are already established in the WWE whereas The Shield will want to prove themselves. But if The Shield win, who gets the pin fall? Ambrose probably needs it the most whereas Rollins has looked extremely impressive. If The Shield win then this feud comes to a halt; what else would The Shield need to achieve against Evolution? I think Evolution will win this, it opens more doors and possibilities for potential match-ups in the near future and I believe there is no way Evolution would reform to lose within two weeks.
Phillipa: “The Shield are the most dominant stable of their generation without a doubt and you have to think that a reformed Evolution, the most dominant stable of their own generation could be the only team to stop them right now. The Shield are rolling into Extreme Rules, following their five minute match at WrestleMania which saw the first ever double-triple power-bomb, they seemed to have met their match when Evolution reared their heads again, but now it seems otherwise after Raw events. Dean Ambrose even managed to overcome the odds on Smackdown and it seems like the future will come out on top, I can’t see the egos of Evolution co-existing in this one.”
2-On-1 Handicap Match – Alexander Rusev vs. R-Truth and Xavier Woods
Alexander Rusev has been impressive during his NXT days and has continued that transition over on Raw by destroying everyone put in front of him. He was on the back foot this past week when R-Truth attacked him, but this is possibly the most obvious outcome of the night, it’s on the card to make Rusev look even better. The only surprise will be if whether this match will go past 10 minutes. Rusev will win the match.
Phillipa: “I think we all know this will be a squash match and Rusev is going to walk it. I’m going with a five minute match with Rusev making Woods and R-Truth tap with a double accolade.”
Elimination Triple Threat Match – Cesaro vs. Jack Swagger vs. Rob Van Dam
We have three different styles brought into this match with strength, an amateur background in wrestling and the high-flying ability being brought together for an epic encounter. This isn’t for anything else but bragging rights, Cesaro and Swagger have their differences, as do Heyman and Colter and Rob Van Dam has a history with Heyman too. Everyone in this match could do with the victory, but I think the new Paul Heyman guy in Cesaro will pick up the key – yet impressive – victory.
Phillipa: “The latest match announced, after Raw I can see why it was announced but I can’t see where it’s heading, Cesaro and Swagger have their own rivalry going on but now Van Dam is in the mix it feels like it’s heading towards a Heyman guy face off. I think you could pick anyone as your winner here but I think Jack Swagger needs it the most because he seems like the one least likely to go anywhere after this feud has ended."
WWE World Heavyweight Championship Extreme Rules Match – Daniel Bryan © vs. Kane
This is a match which hasn’t had the best of build-ups but that’s not Daniel Bryan’s fault. With Bryan involved you know it will be a good match and Kane will also look to be a legitimate threat as he looks to do what The Authority has told him to do and take the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. This is too early to end Bryan’s title run and with the stipulation it opens up a number of possibilities on how this match could finish. If Bryan defeats Kane with a weapon then Kane could be in line for a rematch; either way I think Daniel Bryan will retain the championship.
Phillipa: “Possibly the hardest one to predict, I don’t even think Kane wants the title, I think he just wants to hurt someone and poor Daniel is the one who he decided upon. I think Daniel will put up a good fight and no doubt Brie will involve herself in this one, I also feel her and Stephanie could ignite a feud here tonight but Daniel Bryan will walk out with the titles he won at WrestleMania. He will be thankful it’s May after the April he had.”
