Manchester United will face a stern fight if they want to land Mats Hummels this summer, as the German international is seen as a priority target by Barcelona.
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial reports that the £30million Borussia Dortmund defender is wanted at the Nou Camp as a long-term replacement for Carles Puyol. With the Catalan’s set to lose their club captain and defensive stalwart at the end of this season, the hunt if on to find his successor. And it’s bad news for United, as Barca are said to harbour a strong interest in Hummels and PSG’s Thiago Silva, though the former is the one they stand more chance of landing.
What’s more, El Confidencial speculates that whoever is in charge of the reigning Spanish champions come the summer will have as much as €120million to spend on strengthening the squad, so it looks unlikely that they will be out priced with regards to their transfer ambitions.
United have long sought Hummels, and the potential appointment of Louis van Gaal was said to have significantly bolstered the possibility of them luring him to Old Trafford. If it’s a choice between them and definite Champions League football with Barca however, the obvious preference would surely be in favour of the latter.
