Manchester United supporters have taken to Twitter to urge the club to appoint Pep Guardiola after the Bayern Munich head coach cast doubt over his future at the Allianz Arena.
The former Barcelona boss, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best coaches, told reporters earlier today that Bayern Munich must decide whether he is the right manager for them following Tuesday night’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.
“I have my ideas and I have to convince my players,” the 43-year-old added. “Following this defeat I am even more convinced of my philosophy.”
Guardiola’s comments sparked a frenzy on social media, with a host of excited Manchester United supporters calling for the club to appoint the tactically-astute Catalan. It’s been widely reported this week that the Red Devils will announce the appointment of Dutch coach Louis van Gaal “within days” - but some United fans would rather see Guardiola in the Old Trafford dugout next season.
“I hope that the hierarchy hold fire on Van Gaal amid these reports on Guardiola wanting to leave Bayern Munich,” wrote one fan, while another posted: “If this rumour about Guardiola has any legs [Man Utd] should jump on it quick smart. Would be a massive coup.”
Guardiola won 14 major trophies during a remarkable four-year spell with Barcelona before taking a one-year sabbatical. His debut season with Bayern has been impressive - he won the Bundesliga title in record time and guided the club to the German Cup final, where they will play Borussia Dortmund on May 17 - but this week’s Champions League exit, and the manner of the defeat, has cast a few doubts over his future at the club.
