WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather will make a surprise appearance in Liverpool this summer after a deal was struck to bring boxing’s pound-for-pound king to the city.
The 37-year-old, who is widely regarded as the best fighter of his generation, will make a special appearance on June 24 - as part of a six-date tour of England - according to the Liverpool Echo. Mayweather will attend a special dinner event in the city, where he will participate in a question and answer session, and pose for photographs.
Tickets are expected to be sold immediately, with the people of Liverpool keen to catch a glimpse of the undefeated champion, who takes on Argentina’s Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas tomorrow night.
Mayweather will become the latest boxing legend to visit Liverpool after the likes of Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson, who all made an appearance in the north-west city which was the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
