It has been a really up and down week for me but I am absolutely delighted to be selected in England’s 13-man squad to take on Scotland next week.
The week started quite well at Lord’s, getting a good hundred because it’s always nice to score runs at Lord’s so that was a good moment for me.
Then Middlesex chased down 472 to win which was very disappointing for us but all credit to them, especially Rogers who played an outstanding innings but we have to move on from that. Then I got the call to be in the squad against Scotland so that was another good moment for me so it has been very up and down but hopefully there will be more ups than downs this season.
When I came to the crease in the second innings on Monday we were in a good position and we were trying to get a big lead and the second new ball just came on the Tuesday morning.
I got myself in and reached about 60 or 70 but we lost a few wickets and we were going to declare quite soon so I got on with it and it was just one of those sections of the game where everything came off for me and I reached 130. I felt good and we ended up getting a score we probably should have defended.
One of my sixes actually hit the roof but it was a small boundary on the one side. I managed to middle it really well, I’m sure if we were playing on a wicket in the middle of the square it wouldn’t have reached!
Then came the disappointment in losing the game, it was just one of those days.
I think the pitch got better and better as the game went on and I don’t think we bowled our best or as well as we could have and we came back fighting but we couldn’t take enough wickets to put them under real pressure.
All credit has to go to Middlesex to chase down that score on any wicket is superb but we have to pick ourselves up and go well at Durham.
We were of course playing against Sam Robson and Eoin Morgan who are strong contenders for a spot in the Test side. I played with Sam in the one game in Australia in the performance programme side and he got a 100 there, he is obviously a good player and he played well at Lord’s. He definitely has a good career ahead of him.
I have also played a bit with Morgs in the ODIs and if we get the chance to play against Scotland it will be great to play alongside him.
A lot of people ask how do you find out you are selected for the national side and I found out just before the squad was announced when James Whitaker called me to tell me I was picked and I was very excited and I’m looking forward to that opportunity up in Scotland.
That means I will miss the Yorkshire game up at Durham and you don’t want to miss any Yorkshire games so it will be a bit disappointed but to be selected in the England squad is a very good achievement and a real honour so I am really looking forward to that.
I’m sure the Yorkshire boys will be ok because we have a strong squad as you saw last week when captain Andrew Gale left himself out so I’m sure he will do a good job. We will be better after a defeat like we just suffered.
