Rio de Janeiro has been under the spotlight since the day it started preparing for the World Cup; deaths of builders, stadiums collapsing and the race against time – will it, wont it be finished?
Regardless of all the negativity regarding this summer, we can definitely look forward to the talent on show;Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Frank Ribery, Mario Gotze, and so many more. But we hear of these kinds of players so often. Major tournaments are often huge stepping stones for many youngsters; Thomas Muller, a prime example of 2010, the young German, 20, at the time, finished top goal scorer.
But which youngsters will make a name for themselves in 2014?
Josip Drmic: The Swiss striker has netted 16 goals this season in the Bundesliga, two short of Robert Lewandowski. The clinical 21 year old has produced some fantastic performances; in a relegation fighting, Nurnberg. The youngster’s goals have linked him with moves to the Premier League next season. So keep an eye out, he could be leading Switzerland’s front line.
Bernard Duarte: Commonly known as ‘Bernard’. The Brazilian attacking midfielder has been available to watch in this season’s Champion’s League. The youngster has been a potential signing for numerous top European clubs for a few seasons; could this summer, and his promising future alert Premier League clubs of his quality at the top level?
Ross Barkley: The young scouser has been a star breakthrough act for the Merseyside club, Everton, this campaign. The £50million pound rated 20 year old, has almost definitely concreted his place for this summer’s plane to Rio; but it’ll be interesting to see if he delivers his current form at the greatest stage.
Mateo Kovacic: The Croatian has proven his skill in an under achieving Inter Milan squad. The central midfielders consistency and versatility has commanded his spot in a Croatia’s starting 11, of recent; despite Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic also playing in the same role. The talented midfielder has been a focal point of Manchester United’s transfer list for some time; a textbook occasion for the Croatian to prove his capability this summer, and potentially be saved from Inter.
