Wayne Rooney was rushed for a scan after training on Thursday as fears of a serious injury for the Manchester United player grew.
Rooney had been suffering with a stomach complaint however, medical staff at the club have begun to fear that the illness may be more serious than originally feared.
The club are believed to be assessing the player on Friday, prior to the game against Sunderland on Saturday.
Although United find themselves with no title to chase, with three games to go the chance of gaining 6th spot in the league is still available, as the Class of 92' aim to regain old glories and boost fans morale in the last few remaining matches.
Wayne Rooney is key to this.
Rooney however, may have one eye on the World Cup. No risks will be taken by either player or club regarding the health of their star man. But, Rooney will be desperate to enter a World Cup without an injury looming over him.
In both 2006 and 2010, the England striker found himself under a cloud of doubt over his fitness, with less than perfect performances by the Liverpudlian. Now, Roy Hodgson will be hoping that an injury scare is all this latest blip in Rooney's international career is.
Hodgson will name is squad on Monday May 12 for the tournament in Brazil.
Faith in Hodgson by fans is not as great as one would like for the international manager but, solid performances in Brazil and progression in the competition may just see many fans swallow their words.
To stand any chance though, England will need key players fit and, this of course, includes Wayne Rooney.
