The Baltimore Orioles are sitting at .500 right now with a 12-12 record, but they have been able to do that without consistent pitching and a number of injuries.
One of those injuries was suffered by their young third baseman Manny Machado. A 2013 All-Star, Machado was responsible for some of the most mind-boggling and amazing defensive plays of last year's season.
He's been out of commission since having surgery done on his left knee last October. He was then put on the 15-Day Disabled List this year during Spring Training to begin his rehab, but with the Orioles now dealing with heavy hitting First Baseman Chris Davis' injured oblique, Machado's return couldn't come at a better time.
Baltimore has had a lot of expectations due to their great lineup on paper, including standouts such as Center Fielder Adam Jones, Outfielder Nelson Cruz, Davis, and Machado. The teams pitching rotation has been a bit of a mystery though, despite adding veteran and former New York Met Johan Santana, who is also trying to get healthy after some injury issues.
If this team wants to succeed in the American League, which is always tough, their lineup will need to be healthy and their pitching will need to also be better to secure some wins. Good news for Baltimore, Davis received blood and platelets injections which are supposed to really help and speed up the recovery process.
It would seem that he is also on his way to a steady recovery. In the meantime, we will have to see if Machado can help out while this team tries to healthier and win ball games.
