Luis Suarez is a ‘close second’ behind Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player in the world at the present time, according to Manchester United rival Wayne Rooney. The Liverpool striker has plundered 31 goals in the Premier League this season, earning himself the golden boot and a PFA and FWA awards double.
Ronaldo has an identical haul of league goals for Real Madrid this term, in two fewer games as well, and his Ballon d’Or triumph earlier this year was reward for a sustained period of excellence at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But Rooney believes there is little to choose between his former Manchester United teammate, who left Old Trafford in 2009, and Suarez, who has so very nearly fired Liverpool to a first league title in 24 years.
Suarez scored his most recent goal in Monday’s dramatic 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace - a result which saw Brendan Rodgers concede the title to Manchester City. Liverpool, however, will be in pole position once more if City lose to Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
