Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has been ruled out for 10 weeks after he underwent surgery on his shoulder.

The Blues stopper was forced off in Chelsea's first leg semi-final encounter against Atletico Madrid after just 18 minutes of their goalless draw at the Vicente Calderon.

Veteran custodian Mark Schwarzer has been deputising for the injured Cech in recent weeks.

And the Australian is now expected to start Chelsea's last remaining fixture as Cech has had surgery on his shoulder.

The Czech Republic international could miss a large chunk of Chelsea's pre-season training, which may open the door for Thibaut Courtois to stake a claim for the number one jersey.

Cech, who has represented Chelsea with distinction since joining the club in 2004 from French side Rennes, could lose his first-team spot next season - despite being recently crowned the best goalkeeper in the Premier League by his fellow professionals.

Chelsea go into Sunday's game against Cardiff City knowing that they can no longer win the Premier League title due to Manchester City's convincing 4-0 win last night.
