On Monday, Liverpool threw away a 3-0 lead against mid table Crystal Palace and looked to take away all three points but were left stunned as goals from Damien Delaney and Dwight Gayle in the space of 11 minutes drew the game 3-3.
Liverpool's defence often leaks many goals easily and needs strikers Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez to outscore the opposition in order to win games. This has reduced the goal difference of the team and could have avoided dropping points in rather easier games.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet looked shaky between the sticks at times and doesn't always make the right decisions when required. The recent central defensive pairing of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho doesn't assure too much stability at the back by letting opposition attackers getting past them quite often.
Glen Johnson is a good attacking full-back but his defensive qualities are questioned as he is always caught out of position and loses the ball easily on occasions. Young full-back Jon Flanagan has been a revelation this season as he is often being deployed as a left-back to cover for the injured Jose Enrique.
Brendan Rodgers should look in the market for two central defenders and two full-backs. Steven Caulker would be a great addition to the club as he puts in very consistent performances week in week out for relegated Cardiff City.
Dejan Lovren is very solid at the back and is very good in the air too.
Out-of-favour Manchester City right-back Micah Richards can be brought in as back up to the ageing Johnson. Marcel Schmelzer would be a good buy as he provides Champions League experience which Liverpool needs as they return to the competition after a four-year absence.
Liverpool needs to strengthen their defence in order to compete on all fronts for many seasons to come and most importantly cement their place in the top four in the Premier League.
