Manchester United should avoid signing Thomas Muller

Published 12 Comments

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller ever since Louis van Gaal was tipped to become the next manager at Old Trafford - but is he really the man they need to turn their fortunes around?

Muller is capable of playing in a number of midfield positions and even as a false number nine, which would makes him a terrific player to have in your squad.

However a squad player is exactly what he is at Bayern Munich. It is almost as if his versatility has cost him the chance of holding down a regular spot in a side that has been sweeping up trophies for fun over the past couple of seasons.

There's no doubting Muller's ability - but he is just a clone of several players Van Gaal is set to adopt when he takes over at Manchester United.

The likes of Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj are all players who play in a similar role to Muller.

They are crafty attacking midfielders who like to drift around the forward positions.

Wayne Rooney is likely to be deployed just behind Robin van Persie's - leaving two wide positions free if Van Gaal is going to stick with what seems to be the vogue formation of 4-2-3-1.

So where would Muller fit in?

The Bayern Munich man could not play in a midfield two as it would leave Manchester United open in the middle of the park.

Manchester United should go all out for the likes of Toni Kroos or Javi Martinez if Van Gaal wants to raid his former side.

The Netherlands coach should also make a move for fellow Bundesliga star Mats Hummels as Manchester United's defence needs a major reshuffle ahead of next season.
