Portugal in the last World Cup were knocked out in the last 16 to Spain so there is a bit of work needed to improve on last time. The quarter-finals would be seen as a relative success, but can they qualify from a group including Germany, United States and Ghana?

The probable squad of 23:

Goalkeepers - Eduardo, Beto, Rui Patricio

Defenders - Rolando, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Ricardo Costa, Luis Neto, Vitorino Antunes, Joao Pereira and Bruno Alves

Midfielders - Nani, Joao Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, William Carvalho, Raul Meireles, Silvestre Varela and Danny

Forwards - Helder Postiga, Nelson Oliveria, Cristiano Ronaldo, Hugo Almeida and Eder

Key player - Cristiano Ronaldo. With him seen as the difference maker no matter who for, this World Cup could be the chance for Ronaldo to cement himself as a Portugal legend. With his pace, goals and all around ability he will be determined to do the best for Portugal and give them a successful World Cup.

Player to watch - Miguel Veloso. He has the ability to dictate the midfield he has shown this before at Sporting, Genoa and now Dynamo Kyiv. A good performance could see him earn a move to a club of greater standing.

The manager - Paulo Bento. He took charge in September 2010 and led them to the semi-final of Euro 2012. They have, however, found themselves in tricky scenarios on a couple of occasions and reached the World Cup after beating Sweden in a playoff.
