Marlins ace Fernandez headed to DL

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez underwent an MRI, and is headed to the Disabled List for the first time in his career.

Fernandez underwent the MRI in Los Angeles, just a couple of days after being hit hard by the Padres in San Diego, with a noticeable lack of velocity throughout one of his worst outings of the year.

The Marlins have not yet announced the focus of the MRI or what the injury might be, and manager Mike Redmond will address that in his media availability ahead of tonight's game in Los Angeles.

Fernandez is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA with 70 strikeouts against 13 walks in 51.2 innings this year, and was the 2013 National league rookie of the year.
