There's no doubt that Chelsea need a striker, and they're odds-on to sign Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, but here's why this would be a huge mistake for him.
First of all, let's just establish what an extraordinary campaign he has enjoyed; 36 goals in all competitions. With Atletico Madrid he is going for a treble; a draw would win them the title ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid, they're set to play their Madrid rivals in the Champions League final (having humiliated Chelsea 1-3 at the Bridge in the semi-final second leg), while they clinched the Spanish Super Cup earlier in the season.
If Costa were to stay at Atletico, he would win countless trophies in one of Europe's toughest leagues, he would be revered by his fans and be rated as one of the finest strikers on the continent. He would also play exciting football. However, can he really expect the same at Chelsea? No.
Chelsea, whilst being a superb defensive team, do not have the quality to win the Premier League title, or indeed any trophies, as they found out this season. They attempted defensive anti-football, and Costa's Atletico Madrid, despite being cancelled out in the first leg, simply outclassed Mourinho men in the away game. So why would Costa join a club that are, quite frankly, nowhere near his standard?
Chelsea may be one of the best English teams, but I can't see them offering a genuine title challenge unless they uproot their entire playing philosophy, and Mourinho will not do that; defensive is his speciality.
Besides, who is to say that Costa will retain his form? He will have gained confidence from his stellar season, and staying at Atletico he will likely retain his class, but Chelsea have a history of ruining top players that they signed for big money. To name a few; Andriy Shevchenko, Adrian Mutu, Ricardo Quaresma, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Shaun Wright-Philips, Juan Sebastian Veron, Yuri Zhirkov, Yossi Benayoun etc.
How do we know that Costa won't join that list? Will Costa take that risk? Does he truly have any motives, other than financial, to leave Atletico? Or indeed, any to join Chelsea?
