Stan Van Gundy has an agreement in principe with the Detroit Pistons to become their new coach and president of basketball operations.
ESPN.com are reporting that contracts have been verbally agreed for a five-year deal worth around $35 million and that it will be put to paper by Wednesday.
Golden State Warriors were in the running to land the former Miami and Orlando coach, but appear to have lost out to Detroit.
Van Gundy has never had a losing record with a team and the Pistons will be looking to turn around six straight losing record seasons.
Van Gundy is one of the first moves for coaching appointments during the playoffs with many coaches already being sacked.
Steve Kerr is expected to head to the New York Knicks whilst Van Gundy, who's experience is more on the sidelines than in the front-office area, decided to avoid the allure of returning to Northern California to coach the Warriors.
The Warriors however have now reportedly given up on signing Van Gundy, given this development, and are turning their attentions to Steve Kerr to see if they can lure him away from the expected move to New York.
