Arsene Wenger urged to sign Karim Benzema

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has urged Arsene Wenger to beat Manchester United and Liverpool to the signing of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this summer.

The France international has been strongly linked with a move to several Premier League clubs over the last couple of weeks, with rumours beginning to surface that Los Blancos are keen to secure the services of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who finished the 2013/14 campaign as the Premier League’s top scorer, as a potential replacement for the 27-year-old.

But Parlour believes Benzema would be the perfect summer signing for the Gunners - unless the north London outfit can unearth the next Ian Wright, that is.

"Benzema has been mentioned, he would do a good job,” the former England international is quoted as saying by the Daily Star. "There is one thing with Arsenal, you always get lots of chances.

"They need a fox in the box, an Ian Wright back in the day. An Ian Wright would be perfect.

"We will have to see who they get but I hope it's another massive signing, it would be fantastic for Arsenal."

Wenger is on the lookout for a new striker to ease the pressure on Olivier Giroud. However, the French striker would find his first-team opportunities limited should his compatriot Benzema arrive at the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Benzema is widely regarded as one of Europe’s best strikers. The 6ft 2in forward has netted 17 goals in 34 games this season and could end the campaign with a Champions League winners’ medal - providing Real Madrid defeat rivals Atletico in Lisbon later this month.

Much is likely to depend on whether Real Madrid can strike a deal with Liverpool to sign Suarez - but, even then, the Merseyside outfit would probably be keen to have Benzema at Anfield in return.
