Lionel Messi has reached a contract agreement with Barcelona, reports the club's official site.

The Argentine superstar, who is regarded by many as the best player in the world, looks set to stay at the Nou Camp for the long term.

If reports from are to be believed, the new deal will be worth as much €20 million net per season, which will make him the highest paid player in world football.

The Argentine forward will overtake Cristiano Ronaldo as the top earner in the world after the Portuguese ace signed a world record deal with Real Madrid late last year.

This will come as great news for fans of Barcelona ahead of the side's crunch clash with Atletico Madrid. The Catalans can secure the La Liga title with a victory at The Nou Camp on Saturday evening.

Barcelona will be desperate to gain the victory this weekend, as they look to end a frustrating season on a high.

Messi will then turn his attention to this summer's World Cup, a competition that he could meet Ronaldo in.
