Recent reports in the transfer mill suggest that Manchester United are prepared to spend £27m for young Luke Shaw, which will not only make him one of the most expensive defenders of all time but also one of the most expensive 18 year olds, but surely there are cheaper left backs out there that could do the job.
To make this a fair comparison Luke Shaw's stats (according to transfermarkt.com):
Transfer Value; £13m
Games Played; 39 (35 EPL, 3 FA Cup, 1 friendly)
Transfer Value; £16.3m
Games Played; 40 (34 Bundesliga, 4 cup, 2 friendlies)
Goals; 6 (4 League, 2 Cup)
Assists; 10 (9 League, 1 Cup)
The Swiss left back is currently at VFL Wolfsburg and is valued at slightly more than Shaw but is arguably a lot better. He has impressed in the Bundesliga and has been linked with top teams in Europe, just like Shaw, so could he be a better choice than Shaw?
Transfer Value; £3.3m
Games Played; 41 (28 Eredivisie, 4 CL, 5 EL, 1 Cup, 3 Friendlies)
Goals; 4 (4 League)
Assists; 3 (3 League)
The Dutch left back is rather unknown by anyone outside the Eredivisie but fans of that league will know that the PSV player is a huge prospect. He's made it into the International team a few times and at just over £3m Manchester United would be foolish to spend nine times more on a similar player.
Mattia De Sciglio:
Transfer Value; £9.8m
Games Played; 21 (15 Serie A, 3 CL, 2 Cup, 1 friendly)
Strictly speaking, not a left back, but can play there well. The young Italian is currently at AC Milan but could seek a move else where and with a smaller price tag should Manchester United pick him instead? Understandably his stats of the season just gone aren't the best on the list but who knows what could happen next season?
Transfer Value; £8.1m
Games Played; 45 (28 La Liga, 14 EL, 1 Cup, 2 friendlies)
Goals; 3 (3 League goals)
Assists; 2 (2 EL goals)
With Sevilla winning the Europa League his value may rise but as it stands he's still a cheaper alternative. He has the potential to become a Spanish national team regular with form he's shown this season which has linked him to numerous big European teams. At the age of 21 and showing great potential.
Transfer Value; £3.3
Games Played; 49 (31 La Liga, 13 EL, 4 Cup, 1 friendly)
Goals; 2 (1 league, 1 EL)
Assists; 4 (2 league, 2 Assists)
Another Spanish left back, this time from Valencia. Dubbed the new Jordi Alba and has a similar playing style which could bring United a whole new creative outlook. His value is set to raise but as it stands is another player that is nine times cheaper than Shaw.
