Bacary Sagna set to complete move to Manchester City

Manchester City look to have beaten rivals Manchester United to the signing of Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna.

As reported by The Sun, the French defender is set to complete his move to the Etihad Stadium on a £7 million-per year contract despite late attempts from Manchester United to engineer a deal of their own.

Sagna must be considered quite a coup for champions Manchester City, with the player having established a commendable reputation as one of the Premier League's most consistent right-backs during his seven-year stint at the Emirates Stadium.

As such, Arsenal were obviously keen to retain his services beyond the end of his current deal which is due to expire this summer.

However, Sagna - an experienced French international who was last week named in Didier Deschamps' Les Bleus squad for the World Cup in Brazil - was evidently not particularly tempted by the terms on offer in North London and instead appears to have got exactly what he required from Manchester City.

Quite whether Manuel Pellegrini intends to install Sagna as an automatic starter ahead of Pablo Zabaleta is yet to be seen, although it seems somewhat unlikely given the consistent form displayed by the Argentine over recent seasons.

Manchester United's own reported interest in Sagna came as somewhat of a surprise, not least because the club are yet to appoint a permanent successor to David Moyes.

Experienced Dutchman Louis van Gaal is widely expected to be appointed as Manchester United boss this week, with such an interest in Sagna perhaps hinting that he would like to see Rafael - the current first-choice right-back at Old Trafford - receive some quality competition for his place.

The news that Sagna looks set to depart the club and join a title rival threatens to put somewhat of a dampener on Arsenal's FA Cup celebrations, with Gunners fans - clearly relieved at the club finally having put an end to a nine-year trophy drought following their thrilling 3-2 win over Hull - having expressed their wish for Sagna to remain where he is perfectly clear in a series of affectionate chants at Wembley.
